Planning to help the designers out there to market themselves.

:D

this theme “a world without design” was being done before in 26 sept 2006 as a part of the London Design Festival design consultancy The Partners hosted a panel discussion on the theme of a world without design, tying in with an exhibition on the same theme at their studio. The panellists were designer Paul Priestman of Priestman Goode; Dejan Sudjic, director of the Design Museum and CR editor Patrick Burgoyne.

Happy to know that there are aliken. But sad to know that am i too late or what? .. gosh!

I been searching and searching for the closest answer i could get for solving this design project. Despite having alot to material on hand. There seems to be a missing link. It is the society that i cannot solve, i cannot change without time. I need a enforcement to see througth the change progression. I am egear to witness this change. At least in my lifetime i hope the future will be better.

I talk to Johnathan today. He told me about job prospect and how I really shouldn’t go into other field then advertising. I pondered awhile, and starts to falter if i am really making the right choice for my cereer path. I am afraid that my current impulsive will led to a boring, low paying job that i hope not to be. As for in singapore, i know that what he said is not totally wrong. But.. but.. what am i really hoping for? will there be a change? ..

I don’t think a Singapore  pays as much. according to my survey they are paid around 2.4k- 3k a month for a person for having more then 8 years expereience. Obviously we can see the difference. Question yourself designers! are we being exploited?

http://graphicdesign.meetup.com/461/boards/thread/3543525/0/  <– a forum that discus about graphic designer’s pay

There are quite some information there advicing noobs for salary ranges.

Peopl share about their personal experiences as well.

” Very often, clients do not value your skill. What we are providing is a skill that the client does not have (that is why they need our services). Design industry is highly volatile. Old and emerging medias are always fighting for dominance so it’s important to be up to date with latest trends. Ultimately, I feel that in Singapore, design is a service and realistically speaking, to survive, we must view design as such. Designers are not ‘artists’ as what we are being led to believe in ADM. ” – unknown..

“Designers job differs a lot from others really. Its hard for people who are OUTSIDE the “designers realm” to understand what designers are for… plus… unless you’re in a design/advertising agency… you’ll be treated like the “lower class” ” – unknown

“Exploited.. yes.. treated unfairly..maybe… and of course yes most designers deserve more then what they are earning now… why? because the amount of time spend on a project is not equivalent to the salary! ” – peiling

“I feel the pressure to compromise with poor taste and low budget at times. No, I don’t feel exploited. No, I have been treated fairly. I am satisfied with my current salary. From my understanding, designers in other industries tend to have irregular &/or long working hours. “  -  unknown

Exploitation is a reality of life. Working is exploitation of your life, its been taken away from you for a few hours at a time, and u’r being paid meagrely for it. same in all industries.
clients will always treat you unfairly, cos they dont value the work you’ve done. I believe I deserve to be paid more. everybody has their path to take. not everybody has the same talent or amount of talent.” – seb

“Do you think you are being exploited? Not all the time. Gotta play it smart. Do you think client have treated you unfairly before? Definitely, but that’s where designer rights come in.Do you think you deserve more then what you are earning now? I think creative is getting paid with peanuts. Finally tell me how different designers are from other careers. Taken for granted, a wrong assumption it’s easy money easy life. “  -huimin

Results of my survey.. i asked

What do you think the world will be like without any designers at all.

and people answered:

pretty stupidly designed? not organised or no humour
Everything will be ugly and have no sense of creativity at all.
boring
Dull and boring.
boring.

Seems like they have never thought about will there be even a current world at all? lol

“A designer is a person who designs something. Perhaps the broadest definition is that provided by psychologist Herbert Simon: ‘Everyone designs who devises courses of action aimed at changing existing situations into preferred ones.’ [1]

As well as amateur designers, there are many professional designer occupations (see list of Examples). To become a professional designer usually requires study to degree level and certain work experience or training. Entry to some design professions is strictly controlled or limited by legal requirements, but use of the title ‘designer’ is generally un-regulated.

Working as a designer usually implies being creative in a particular area of expertise. Designers are usually responsible for developing the concept and making drawings or models for something new that will be made by someone else. Their work takes into consideration not only how something will look, but also how it will be used and how it will be made. There can be great differences between the working styles and principles of designers in different professions.

In the 1980s the term ‘designer’ began to be applied to products such as furniture and clothing that had distinctive aesthetics or were the work of certain ‘signature’ designers. So, for example, there were ‘designer chairs’ and ‘designer jeans’. The term later came to be applied to anything that was ostentatiously created for a purpose, such as ‘designer drugs’, or even the ‘designer stubble’ worn by some fashionable men.” – from wikipedia

Just in case people wonder why dose this website look so ugly. Precisely is because i want you to feel how is will be if all the web graphic designer were gone. And think if this is what is left for our web in the future.

My first job as a multimedia designer i was paid 1400

1120 was my take home pay.  I didn’t get any pay rise even after 2 years of hardship.

I work hard on freelance as well to earn more. The agency only pay me 40 percent of the entired project.  But i am the one who do all the work. Including liasing, designing, contacting, talkingt o suppliers even bring back the work to the client. Since i didnt even get to step into the agency or use their electricity, why am i paying 60percent of the entire earning to them?

Since, i step out of that agency and decided to source for client myself. Client was stingy people. My first full flash website i did with a friend was only charged 400 bucks. We are bloody slaughtered. But Y are prices so low, and we are being explioted?

Of course things change to be better. I manage to get higher paying freelance and also changed a job. But i still feel that we are very underpaid judging from the amount of work we have to do. We are talents We are not photoshop manipulator; Like art cannot be engineered! We ought to earn more now and in the near future!
